Walking towards an European regionally based research area on new processes and flexible intelligent manufacturing systems

Objective

Manufacturing is a key economical activity in Europe, with a turnover of 4,300 B, representing the 31.5 % of the total added value generated and offering 40 million direct jobs. But manufacturing is at risk in Europe and its competitiveness sits on innovation and r+d. National and European programs have increased their requests towards more technology driven targets (new functional materials, nanotechnologies), while short to mid term objectives of many manufacturing sectorial needs have been attended by Regional research programs, playing the role of "near to industry", specially in those numerous cases where sectors are highly concentrated in particular European poles. But the fragmentation of research at this regional level is significant, and little has been done to realize the "regional dimension of ERA (Com 2001-549)". Said that, MANUNET Coordination Action, based on the results of MANUNET SSA, tackles the challenge of supporting the building up of the European Research Area on Manufacturing, mainly based on a regional structure, with the following strategic objectives:
(1) Execution of two Common Call for Proposals for Research in Manufacturing, open to 22 European Regions, as the key contribution from MANUNET to ERA
(2)Durable cooperation by means of the execution of the MANUNET model of yearly Coordinated Calls, in an evolutionary path that will also benefit from the extended opportunities in FP7 (ERA-NET-PLUS)
(3)Coordination with other European R&D support initiatives in Manufacturing, from the Technology Platforms side (emphasis in MANUFUTURE) and other instruments ( Eranets, MNP area of FP6/7)
(4)Mutual enrichment of the regional/national R&D support programmes by fruitful interchange of experiences
(5)Enlargement to 31 Regions, creating a notable platform to impact on European manufacturing research.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

ERA-NET/1/CA-SSA

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
