Objective
Climate change is becoming a sensitive factor in human socio-economical activities as anthropogenic activities alter the Earth system. This can entail rising losses and damage associated with climatic hazards, thus requiring urgent and purposeful adaptation to climate conditions and managing climate-related risks.
The conference "WMO Conference on Living with Climate Variability and Change: Understanding the uncertainties and managing the risks" (LWCVC) to be held in Espoo, Finland, 17- 21 July 2006, co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, and the International Research Institute for Climate Prediction will review possibilities and constraints in integrating climate risks and uncertainties into the main decision-making areas that are critically sensitive to climate variability and change.
The conference will draw on the experiences of public and private organizations worldwide that have been engaged in creating and using climate information and predictions to assess and manage related risks. Particular efforts will be devoted to the dissemination of the conference recommendations to key stake holders. The focus of the conference is on decision-processes in a real-world context with critical climate relationships. Europe has a responsibility in global impacts but certainly much to offer worldwide in terms of political will, technological expertise and management practices.
It is thus timely that Europe takes a leading role in this endeavour to harness management, technological and institutional issues at stake. The goal of the conference is to make substantial progress in the establishment
