Intergenerational Equity in Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Egypt (4thc. B.C. - 7thc. A.D.)

Objective

Intergenerational Equity in Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Egypt (4thc. B.C. - 7thc. A.D.) The purpose of the inquiry Dr Sabine Huebner wants to carry out is to analyse how people in antiquity tried to solve the problem of equity between the generations. The analysis will deal with the topic of solidarity between generations, defined by traditions, religious precepts, moral concepts, and determining economic, social and political factors, a solidarity that could be expressed by parental care, financial aid and residential care of the elderly.

The term "generation" stands for the collectivity of individuals born in a specific period of time. The defined solidarity between generations is referred to as intergenerational contract. The inquiry explicitly deals not only with the relationship between the working generation and the retired one but also with the obligations parents had to their underage children. Changes and shifts of emphasis during the transition from a Graeco-Roman to a Christian society will b e paid special attention.

The care for the elderly, thoughts of justice, compensation and rewarding will play a leading part; aspects of social, religious and cultural history and the history of mentality shall complement one another. An analysis of the after-life and influences of Graeco-Roman and early Christian ideas and values on the present society will conclude the research. Due to its wealth of documentary source material and cultural, ethnical and religious diversity Egypt was chosen as a case study.
