Objective
This STREP project will demonstrate operational performance of a grid-connected 2 MW wave energy power plant to be located 10km off the Portuguese coast in a 60m water depth near Figuera da Foz. The AquaBuOY is a wave energy conversion device that makes significant advances in performance from ocean tested predecessor technologies. It is now ready for a full scale demonstration. A grid connection licence has been received from EDP in Portugal.
The municipality expressed full support for the project. The project will achieve the following performance objectives: - # of devices | nameplate capacity (MW) up to 10 devices | 2 MW - Offshore site (distance | depth) ~ 10 km | 60 m - Technical availability > 80% - Energy production (MWh/yr) ~ 5000 - Capital cost (_/kW) < 1500 - Cost of energy (_/kWh) < 20 - Capacity factor (%) > 25 - Conversion efficiency (%) > 40 The project promotes introduction of an innovative, cost competitive renewable energy system from ocean waves.
