Bright light effect on performance and alertness during daytime

Objective

The project is aimed at reinforcement of professional maturity of the researcher through (I) the researchers own study using the partner institutions resources (light laboratory), and (II) the advanced training on research related problems.

(I) The study: Bright light (BL) can affect human central nervous system either through circadian clock (phase shift) or independent of it. Little is known about daytime exposure of BL on cognitive performance and alertness. However, there is a decrease in performance an d alertness in the afternoon hours (post-lunch dip) manifesting itself in decreased productivity and increased accidents rate. Postlunch dip is related to the ultradian (12 h) rhythms of sleepiness and of the circadian clock system. The ultradian rhythms o f brain hemispheres activity are periodically asymmetric and better performance is associated with symmetric rhythms of brain hemispheres activity. The research is aimed at alleviation of the postlunch dip in performance and alertness by exposure to BL. It is assumed that BL may produce symmetry of the ultradian rhythms of information processing in both hemispheres. It is planned to study 20 subjects during two the 24-hour constant routine experiments in 2 lighting conditions: (i) the baseline: light of 500 lx (ii) the BL: daytime exposure to intermittent BL (six 15 min. pulses of 5000 lx light every 60 min. of 500 lx light within 6.5 h) Processing speed and accuracy of laterally exposed stimuli will be measured and recorded (by purposely designed computer software) and alertness by self-rating techniques every 30 min. Practical implications of this study might be an ecological method of performance and alertness enhancement

(II) The advanced training will include completion of courses on research and project planning and management, ethics for research using human participants, upgrading statistical knowledge as well as presentations of the research results to different audiences.
