Objective
For "RES in schools", 19 partners from 10 countries (Austria, Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Norway, Greece, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Finland) work together on four individual projects. The major element of this project cluster is the integration of renewable energy installations in schools or other public buildings. In order to multiply the considerable demonstration effect these facilities will have, comprehensive awareness raising programmes are implemented in educational institutions ranging from kindergartens to secondary schools and colleges.
Making the issue of sustainable energy part of the curriculum is a major aspect. This process is supported by measures like the provision of high quality educational material, training for teachers, workshops and seminars. In addition to that, the students and teachers involved have the unique chance to put theory into practice. Pupils, depending on their age, participate in activities like the planning and design of installations or the search for financial means. Where possible, they are even involved in the actual installation of the systems. This hands-on experience of renewable energy solutions not only creates a lasting awareness of the topic, it benefits the students in many ways as they gain valuable insights into the business world and aspects like project management and finance.
Besides, the international approach taken in this project has opened up numerous opportunities. The teachers and students as well as all the other people involved in the network are offered the unique chance to get in touch, co-operate and exchange valuable experience and know-how with colleagues from all over Europe. To promote this international dialogue, there are a regular newsletter and an information-exchange forum on the Internet.
Project 1 - Renewable Energy Schools (Austria, Great Britain, Norway, Spain):
In each of the participating countries, 10 schools are equipped with a renewable energy installation. In order to make this investment in sustainable technologies a unique learning experience, students and teachers actively participate in the project. They are involved in activities like, for example, planning and designing the installations, identifying companies specialised in the relevant technologies or raising financial means.
Project 2 - Nordic PV (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Great Britain):
The installation of a grid-connected PV system on one pilot school per participating country, the formation of national networks and further dissemination activities, e.g. the creation of a website, aim to promote photovoltaics in Nordic countries. The website www.pvschools.net is already up and running, it provides interesting information on the project, comprehensive educational material and facts on photovoltaic systems.
Project 3 - PV-Publish (Italy, Great Britain, Germany):
Remarkable demonstration projects on public buildings and schools combined with promotion and information campaigns are meant to serve the expansion of the photovoltaic sector in Italy. The focus lies on the advancement of building integrated photovoltaic systems. Concrete marketing measures are, for example, the preparation of a CD-ROM and a booklet as well as workshops and seminars.
Project 4 - Didact RES (Italy, Greece):
At secondary and technical schools in Agrigento and Central Macedonia, training courses on renewable energy issues and energy efficiency are prepared and implemented. The activities include, for example, the development of a CD-ROM on renewable energy and the training of teachers.
