Organic waste

Objective

Description of project objectives:
- Show the feasibility of joint treatment of the local wastes in the heated municipal digester and find conditions and optimal mixture to do it, during one-year operation;
- Set-up a global approach methodology for waste treatment, application and reuse in regional scale;
- Take a census of animals and zootechnic farms in order to estimate the biogas producibility and the consequent potential energy;
- Analyse the consumption of thermal and electrical energy and the production of animal waste in order to verify possible economical advantages;
- Promote the introduction of a process for the extraction of biogas from the organic fraction of solid urban wastes and pig manure in alternative to the production of compost;
- Develop an integrated regional action plan for the optimal exploitation of the substantial small-hydroelectric and agricultural biomass potential of the Region of Western Greece

Description of the work done until 31/03/2002:
- Codigestion of agricultural and agro-industrial residues in municipal digester. Monitoring and assessment of optimal management;
- Collection and compilation of data and diagnosis of the situation.
During the first year of project implementation, data was collected regarding the region, the kind and quantities of all the different sources of waste (agricultural, industrial, sludge and solid wastes) and the residues characterisation. This phase demonstrated the feasibility of joint treatment of many of the wastes in the heated municipal digester.

During this period a considerable effort has been put to contact public entities and regional authorities in order to get data of the region, relevant and necessary to the continuity of the project;
- Evaluation of the energetic potential of the plant and post treatment;
- Several anaerobic biological batch fermentation's have been carried-out, in order to define the adequate and maximum quantity of olive mill water that can be accepted by the system, and determine the effect on the biodegradability of the sludge. The results from batch test give substantial information on the residue biodegradability and biogas potentiality.

The main conclusions gathered from the test were:
- The process showed a stable performance during the 120 testing days. The methane percentage increased progressively from 1% to about 78 % at the end of the test;
- The yield of the gas conversion is about 0,38 litres of CH4 for grams of added COD, at 30(0)C.
- The total methane production is about 1800 m3/day, when all the residues will be available.

Promotional plan of Biomass in the olive pomace (extractor sector).
Visits have been made to all the installations that process olive pomace in Andalusia. Contacts have been made with the industry for knowing its opinion on the current and the future situation. Installations have also been visited with the objective of understanding the situation and needs of the installations. A data base has been made using the information obtained.
A map has been made showing the location and type of installation. The data obtained: the amount of olive pomace processed in recent seasons and predictions for the future, treatment systems, daily capacity processed, storage capacity, energy consumption, work force, use of cogeneration energy systems, investments required for the improvement of installations and the estimation of the installations in the situations that have had to change location.
A report of the current situation has been made, after obtaining the data. The evolution of the products obtained from olive pomace has also been analysed, as well as the possibilities that the different processes offer for electricity generation (cogeneration and generation).
Study for the exploitation of animal waste in the Gioia del Colle, Puglia Region.

Objectives:
The results from the project implementation are summarized in the following lines:
- Census and data collection has been concluded;
- Thermal and electrical demand assessment has been made on the whole territory;
- Technical and economic solutions have been pointed out for the best exploitation of animal waste in the aforementioned region;
- These solutions have led to an optimal plan for managing the characteristics of the farms and for solving the regional problem.
Implementation and Development of Alternative Energy. Extraction of biogas from the solid urban waste organic fraction;
- Biomass generation study and biomass flow.
Study of treatment alternatives of organic matter;
- Financial study
Study for calculating the investment of the project, its financing, the implication of the different Administrations, cattlemen groups and private investors in the same, and the final treatment fee for different situations.

Integrated regional action plan for the development and exploitation of small hydropower and biomass energy potential of Western Greece;
- Data concerning the hydro petential of Regon of Western Greece were collected including all small , medium sized and big rivers, existing and operating hydroelectric plants. Possible sites for small hydro exploitation were analysed in detail. These sites were visited and examined. All data collected and helped on the evaluation and assessment of each site to finally determine 10 possible sites for small hydro exploitation.

The flow duration curve of each selected site was determined after on site measurements. Water level data was collected and the flow duration curve was determined:
- Concerning the biomass potential, all available data was collected and the energy content of each type of biomass agriculture residue was evaluated. The data was focused on the most important agriculture species of Region of Western Greece (olive tree prunings, corn residues, vine yards residues) that could contribute to biomass fuel mix;
- The Methodology for the assessment of total produced and the available quantities of agricultural biomass based on primary data collection is in progress showing very promising results on the most suitable fuel mix.
Expected results achieved:
- Consolidate and increase the production of biomass;
- Determination of olive pomace potential for energy production with on site visits and data collection;
- Assessment of current energy systems used and problems that are facing;
- Collection and evaluation of hydrological and biomass agriculture data;
- Determination of hydro and biomass regional potential for optimal future use;
- The codigestion of olive oil wastes is a recommendable solution, having a very stable and efficient system, since the start-up procedure will be adequate;
- electricity production can be made in very good way to reduce operating costs;
- environmental benefits, significant reduction of CO(2) emissions;
- improvement of the local and regional economy.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
