Excellent phase-change data storage materials

Objective

Today, 4.7 GB DVD discs in use are made of phase-change chalcogenides. In five years, the 1000 GB MODS discs based on the same materials are expected to be commercialized and non-volatile phase-change memories may revolutionize the next generation of laptops and digital cameras.

However, as written in Nature last year: A paradoxical situation exists when a device such as an optical disc is functional and commercially available but the structural changes behind the utilized transition are unknown. There is a big European effort in the field of phase-change optical memory, with the main competition being in Japan.

Finding out the mechanisms involved should greatly help in increasing European competitiveness in this; for a future technology, which is electrical RAM also using phase-change chalcogenides (USA competitors), the same applies.

The aim of the proposed research is to reveal the atomic-scale mechanisms underlying optically and electrically driven phase transformations by using molecular-dynamics computer simulation that will make it possible to monitor atomic motions induced by light or electrical current in phase-change chalcogenides. This knowledge can then be used to develop faster, more stable, and higher capacity phase-change data storage materials.

The guarantee for the success of the project is the expertise of the fellow and the host (Prof. S.R. Elliotts group in Cambridge) in the proposed field due to their previous extensive molecular dynamics simulation studies of photo-induced phenomena in chalcogenide glasses.

During the fellowship in Cambridge, the fellow will obtain the best possible advanced-research-training in the proposed multidisciplinary area, which is perfectly suited to his individual needs and will guarantee reaching professional maturity as an independent researcher.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
