Probing the neural basis for verbal working memory impairments in developmental language disorders

Objective

Research Program: Some children who are otherwise quite normal have great difficulty in learning to speak or read. Behavioral measures indicate that these children have significant deficits in verbal working memory. Barry et al., (submitted) have found that parents of children with language impairments (SLI) also have a reduced verbal working memory. This suggests that deficits in verbal working memory are heritable and are a risk factor for SLI.

The project will apply neuro-imaging techniques to investigate the neural basis for the deficits. The research will extend current understanding of heritable risk factors associated with SLI and will have significant implications for the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. Specific Training Objective: Dr Barry has used electrophysiological techniques and behavioral measures to study speech processing in children with language impairments. The proposed program will provide training in fMRI which is complementary to electrophysiology.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
