Summary of the Action:
The work here is to create an expert system making use of formal methods (econometrics) and systematic tools (economic models) to identify and analyse the regional and global challenges which the present and future EU Member States face in the process of economic integration in the next decade. The work is a direct outcome of the enlargement futures steering group meeting in May 2002, in which there was a significant involvement of User DGs. In 2003 expert groups will launched to support for economic model simulations and scenarios. They will examine the main drivers of change, specific to the economic integration process, and analyse the ways to achieve the EU's targets of competitiveness and sustainability. The action is aimed at informing European policy makers and the public at large about policy challenges related to future technological and socio-economic developments. Rationale In the area of policy co-ordination the Lisbon Council foresaw a central role for DG ECFIN: "The Broad Economic Policy Guidelines should focus increasingly on the medium- and long-term implications of structural policies and on reforms aimed at promoting growth potential, employment and social cohesion, as well as on the transition towards a knowledge-based economy." DG EMPL and DG REGIO have expressed a special interest in this Action.
