Trophic carbon transfer efficiency under carbon dioxide stress

Objective

Current models on future climate change predict a twofold increase in atmospheric CO2 and associated decrease in oceanic pH by about 0.4 units until the end of present century. How this drastic change will affect marine ecosystem dynamics and food webs in the coastal ocean is unforeseen. Increasing evidence suggest that phytoplankton, which is at the base of the marine food web, is affected at various levels cell physiology, elemental composition and community structure - by the alteration of dissolved CO2 concentrations. Therefore, present interactions between phytoplankton and zooplankton can be altered with the consequence of a significantly reduced trophic transfer efficiency and subsequent secondary production. We propose to study the effects of a CO2/pH change on phytoplankton biochemical composition and concurrent effects of potentially altered food quality on secondary producers in the marine system. Three major issues will be addresses in separate controlled experiments by using relevant and natural co-occurring species: 1. the change in the biochemical composition of essential nutrients in algae, 2. the consequence for growth and reproductive success and 3. the effects of increased carbohydrate excretion on zooplankton feeding behavior. The proposed research will not only benefit the excellence of science in the EU by establishing a new field of research in zooplankton ecology, but also foster the career of the researcher by the extending his knowledge by learning of new state-of-the-art techniques in lipid chemistry and by the achievement of complementary skills.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
