Objective
The objective of the proposed work is to investigate a terminal-oriented approach to realise VoIP in a mesh network context. More specifically, the objective is to investigate the use of the Datagram Congestion Control Protocol in conjunction with an adaptive VoIP codec to determine what level of performance can be attained in an 802.11-based mesh network. A terminal-based approach is chosen, as it can be quite difficult for any network device to have sufficient knowledge to make appropriate decisions and take appropriate control actions to deliver good quality service in a mesh- networking context.
The proposed work raises many interesting questions including the following:
- How is endpoint-based admission control effected?
- When does the terminal decide that the call quality is too poor to be sustained?
- What feedback is required from DCCP to the adaptive codec?
- How should the codec adapt, based on this feedback?
- How much VoIP traffic can a 802.11s network support in different configurations?
- Are 80 2.11e mechanisms necessary to deliver appropriate quality to adaptive VoIP applications in a mesh network?
The objective, then, is to develop solutions to the above problems. The work will be performed initially through simulation, but in the later stages of the project, some prototype systems will be used to validate the research. As the work is in an area related to that in which the researcher has worked heretofore, it will leverage the researchers existing skills. However, aspects of the proposal are new to the researcher and hence will augment his skill-set, helping bring him to a position of professional maturity.
