Objetivo
Human environment preservation reasons caused the introduction of the legal means (RHS, WEEE Directives) requiring the ban of the use of hazardous materials, like lead-containing solders. This created the urgent need for safe alternative materials, thus stimulating the scientific efforts to resolve the problem. It is clear now that lead free soldering is a foregone conclusion. There are several alternative alloys under investigation, some of which are already in use.
The submitted ToK project is focused on the selecting the best ones from the many available alternatives. I will be done by means of sophisticated theoretical and experimental methods. Starting from the basic research on experimental determination of the thermodynamic properties of such alter native alloys, through phase diagram calculations, determination of physico-chemical properties as density, surface tension and wetting angle, and structural characteristics of the soldered joint, the work is to be completed on preparation of the "ready-to -use" material and/or technology.
Apart from the scientific aspect of the ToK project which is very important and undoubtedly will reinforce the research potential of our institute, even more significant benefit will come from transfer of knowledge towards the Polish industry in the field of lead-free soldering coming from our European partners, who have been much more advanced in implementing new materials and technologies. Our international scientific cooperation and expertise in execution of international research programmes will guarantee the proper execution of the TOK project. On the other hand the already existing cooperation between our institute and representatives of Polish electronic industry will help to transfer the new technology from research to industry.
