Objective
The Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices (CRANN) is a nanoscience institute in Trinity College Dublin. The research programme at CRANN combines the strengths of world-class scientists across three research themes: Magnetic Nanostructures and Devices, Bottom-up Fabrication and Testing of Nanoscale Integrated Devices and Nanobiology of cell surface interactions. Relationships with SME's and an industrial partnership with INTEL and Hewlett Packard are also critical to the centre. Construction of a 6000 m2 institute to house CRANN will be complete in early 2007.
This institute will feature clean-rooms, vibration-free labs and specialist nanofabrication facilities. At present in Ireland, and within CRANN, there is a knowledge gap in the area of nanofabrication. CRANN wants to ensure that the new facility will have this expertise to match the excellence in other areas of nanomaterial synthesis and characterisation. For the present project four researchers with established expertise in the fabrication and research of nanostructures and nanodevices will be recruited.
Each researcher, will work as part of a research team to commission and operate the state-of-the-art nanofabrication facility in CRANN. The transfer of knowledge will ensure, the successful development of a the nanofab facility, the training of our staff in nano processing, nano fabrication and device characterization, the embedding of new research skills within our institute and the engagement of the MC fellows in research projects, providing them with valuable research experience.
The project will enhance CRANN's position as a research centre and will maintain EU competitiveness in nanoscience, while enabling increased GDP spend on research and a fully functioning ERA.
