Objective
The focus of this project is to transfer new methods, competence and skills in the field of functional genomics to the host institution - the Faculty of Biotechnology of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland (FBJU), from top European institutions.
The knowledge to be transferred is required to advance the FBJU research on newly-discovered proteins, responsive to inflammatory mediators. The research will result in better understanding of systemic organism response to inflammation and cancer (also known as acute phase response).
This research is of vivid interest for the EU, since it harmonizes with one of the major thematic priorities of FP6, e.g. life sciences, genomics and biotechnology for health. Three selected partners from United Kingdom, Germany and Italy have both, excellent means and best-possible qualifications, to ensure efficient and effective transfer of complementary skills and unique models to the FBJU.
The relationships between the FBJU and the Partner institutions are of mutual benefit since the Partners share with the FBJU an interest in systemic response to inflammation and cancer, although they are focused on different aspects of these fields.
The transfer of knowledge will allow the FBJU to resolve research problems which are currently beyond the FBJU capacity, due to the lack of access to novel technologies and models and due to the multidisciplinary nature of the chosen topic of research. In addition to the recruitment of a leading senior experts in the field, we plan to invite highly motivated experienced researchers from the EU and Associated Candidate Countries for a collaborative research on acute phase response. The ACUP project will not only substantially increase research and education potential of the FBJU but also will help translate the individual FBJU experience into long-term regional impact by bringing the FBJU to a leading position in Central Europe in the field of organism responses to inflammation and tumour.
