Objective
Since problems related to sleep are increasing in modern societies, an increasing number of specialists in both sleep research and sleep medicine are needed. Presently, in Europe there is a large discrepancy between well developed and less developed countries in both sleep research/medicine education and practice. In the former countries there is a well established program for training sleep specialists, while in the latter no regular training is available. The European Sleep Research Society (ESRS) has arranged theoretical courses on sleep research/medicine, which have revealed a considerable interest and need for high quality education in this field. ESRS wants to continue in this direction, and applies for funding for the organization of a series of teaching events in this field. The program is aimed at either "early stage" or "experienced" (with up to 10 years of experience) sleep researchers/clinicians from all European countries. Participation of students from less developed European countries as well as participation of women researchers is specifically encouraged.
The program consists of three types of events:
i) four training courses, lasting three days;
ii) four practical training periods in a sleep research laboratory or a sleep clinic, lasting one week;
iii) one symposium, lasting three days.
Each training course and the following practical training period will take 40 trainees. Trainees will be evaluated after both events. All trainees (160) will participate in the final symposium.
The goal of the program is to provide young trainees from different European countries with:
i) an excellent and uniform theoretical and practical education in sleep research/medicine;
ii) the opportunity to gain experience from reciprocal interaction and from that with top level senior researchers.
Complementary skills, including management, ethical questions, science funding and gender questions will be discussed in workshops during the symposium.
