Objective
In 2005, a Federation des Experts Comptables Européens (FEE) discussion paper concluded that "there is an overall need for more research and learning from experience to direct developments in risk management and internal control" (FEE, 2005). The proposed series of four linked conferences on risk management systems, governance and internal control is a direct response to this call and addresses key issues that are central to the achievement of the Lisbon strategy's objective of making the EU the world's most dynamic knowledge-based economy by 2010. It will initiate a unique European interdisciplinary and coordinated research approach, and provide an exceptional training ground for the next generation of academic researchers, regulators and practitioners. From a European perspective, the need for additional research arises from a requirement for a common European language in risk management and internal control to assist in achieving the market efficiency, company competitiveness and integration that are central to the Lisbon strategy.
Educationally, a cross- disciplinary approach is essential because modern risk management has its roots in a number of unrelated disciplines, with the result that academic research into risk is discipline specific, and engenders little or no complementary learning. The conferences will bring academics from financial economics, mathematical finance, accounting and audit together with industry experts to create a unique and distinctive cross-disciplinary network in risk, governance and control. The conferences and web-assisted network will ensure progress towards the European Research area, and dissemination of knowledge of good practice that will aid both national and international policy making.
