Development and study of a new class of shape memory releasable fasteners

Final Activity Report Summary - CERINKA (Development and study of a new class of shape memory releasable fasteners)

On the way to develop and study a new class of shape memory releasable fasteners consisting of shape memory wires and permanent magnets we studied thermomechanical properties of thin NiTi wires of various diameters and heat treatments, attraction force between permanent magnet arrays performing mechanical experiments and developing a shape memory alloy (SMA) hysteresis model and a model for attraction force of two cylindrical magnets/arrays of cylindrical magnets.

We have found a technological procedure for production of NiTi-hook fasteners of various hook densities. Using the procedure we were able to control the mechanical and acoustic properties of the manufactured fasteners by adjusting heat treatment of the NiTi hooks, their geometric parameters and density of the hooks. Within the study of the developed SMA releasable fasteners we modified an existing SMA model for the case of straining of two interconnected SMA hooks. We also succeeded to combine SMA fasteners with magnetic fasteners into one quiet SMA-permanent magnet releasable fastener.
