Characterisation of Microbial Communities degrading Xenobiotics

Objective

Xenobiotics are man made chemicals of organic origin, and are a persistent problem in Europe, and Worldwide. These include emulsifying agents such as nonylphenols and nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPE), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Paths) derived from incomplete combustion processes, and phthalates, which are used as additives in plastics and surfactants such as linear alkyl benzene suffocate (LAS). They have an impact on human quality of life, through influence on health, and avoidance techniques, and an impact on the environment, by direct impact, and by magnification through the food chain. Current treatment of xenobiotics is complicated, and very expensive, especially for remediation of existing contaminated sites. Anaerobic biodegradation (or treatment of xenobiotics has the potential for much cheaper, and rapid removal of xenobiotics. However, the potential of this technology is only now being proven, and knowledge of microbiology is very low. This application proposes a two-year postdoctoral research project with the applicant as a proven researcher in the field of degradation of xenobiotics, concentrating on characterising the microbes mediating anaerobic degradation of xenobiotics. The project has five main objectives, which are; sampling of xenophobic degrading enrichments, from a related large project; characterisation of the genetics of the ecology of the enrichments, using advanced molecular methods; classical characterisation in terms of appearance and response to stains and substrates in-site; isolation, culturing and classification of the physiology of isolates; and application of the tools developed through the project by bio augmentation, and investigation in pilot- and laboratory scale reactors.
