Objective
Strategic objectives addressed: ? To reduce direct operating costs of aircraft servicing at the airport parking (Strengthening competitiveness 1.3.1.1 k), ? To increase onboard security (Improving aircraft security 1.3.1.3,d). Strategic expected achievement: Modelling, interpretation and check of apron's activities leading to: ? 10% decrease in aircraft servicing costs, ? Reduction in take off delays due to turn around time over-run, ? Warning on every hostile attempt that could be initiated while aircrafts are parked. Proposal abstract: The proposed project addresses the specific case of automatically supervising commercial aircraft servicing operations at a designated airport. On the apron area, aircrafts are parked and serviced by specialised ground support vehicles (fuel, catering, baggage, small maintenance). The efficiency and security of the handling (servicing) process are significant issues for airport authorities, aircraft operators and citizens. The AVITRACK apron's activity model target of the research, will be able to model, interpret and check normal servicing operations and to track objects and persons over the airport parking area. The envisaged application is the Airport away from the terminal buildings, in most cases, under the control of the airport operators and not air traffic control. It is envisaged that the model will exploit real-time information from video and infrared images. Hardware devices and algorithms, yet to be developed, will be based on image segmentation, objects tracking and intelligent knowledge based system needs and capabilities. The interpretation and model checking will identify the kind of objects and their roles. Modelled servicing tasks will be compared with the reality to monitor apron global-activities; unexpected delays will generate warnings to airport operators; direct operating cost savings are expected as well as the removal of turn around time over-run.
