A doctoral training network in plant development research: from single molecule to whole plant

Objective

Academic training of early stage researchers across Europe still shows little integration in the area ofPh.D. education. This lack of coherence is addressed by proposing a structured Ph.D. program thatofferes training modules in special subject areas as we ll as training in complimentary skills. The proposed program - 'A doctoral training network in Plant development research: from single moleculeto whole plant (ADOPT) - provides a new incentive in molecular plant sciences with a strong link tobioinformatics and biotechnology. Molecular plant sciences will gain in importance as the EuropeanResearch Area (ERA) becomes reality, because the research addresses major challenges of theEuropean Community as it transitions from a community of 15 to a community of 27. Food security and quality, and sustainable agricultural productivity were identified by the European Commission as keyareas for research in the future. The proposed ADOPT program addresses these issues, but in thesame way cares about the individual fellow . The training is not entirely restricted to the subject area.Fellows will have the opportunity to increase their knowledge in complimentary skills to learn how to communicate their results to the general public and to the scientific community. Thus, fello ws areprovided with a set of qualifications for a successful science career. The proposed program is a multi-host training network with participants from the Max Planck Institutefor Plant Breeding Research and the University of Cologne (Germany), the Instit ute of BioorganicChemistry (Poznan, Poland), the Institute of Plant Sciences (CNRS, Gif sur Yvette, France) and the Biological Research Centre (Szeged, Hungary). The composition of the host organisations providesexcellent training conditions because fellow s have access to resources that a training by an individualhosts could never offer. The composition also garantuees a true multidisciplinary approach with each host offering training in his field of excellenc
