Objective
Founded in 2000 on an initiative from the Max-Planck Society, the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) in Astrophysics links six institutions in the Munich-Arching area with world-class research programmes in astronomy, astrophysics or astroparticle physics. This IMPRS provide a structured, coherent, interdisciplinary and fully international training programme, which spans 3 years and leads to a PhD from one of the two Munich universities. All lectures and group training sessions are in English. Research training is fully integrated within individual research groups, but is uniformly monitored and assessed throughout the school. Three admissions rounds have garnered 223 applications from 45 different countries; 51 students have been admitted (23 of them female). The first 20 PhD's will graduate during 2004. The Max-Planck Institute submits this proposal for Astrophysics on behalf of the five German partners in this IMPRS. We request EC support for 240 person-months of training, just half of the 10 studentships already committed to the school by the Max-Planck Society. If funded, 10% of student support within the school will come from the EC, 20% from central Max-Planck funds, and 70% from the internal budgets of the individual partner institutes. Currently, only 15% of the student body is German while more than half is non-German citizens of the EU or Associated States. Wide-ranging publicity, worldwide recruitment and high visibility science have resulted in very broad name recognition for this IMPRS among the international astronomical community. Most of the stated goals for a Marie Curie Early Stage Training site have already been reached. Community support will ensure that this exemplary graduate school continues to train European astrophysicists at the heart of European astronomy.
