Molecular gas diagnostic with short laser pulses

Objective

Our project aims at developing a complete experimental set-up in order to implement femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy (TRS) techniques for diagnostics of molecular gas sample. Femtosecond DFWM (Degenerate four wave mixing), CARS (coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering), or RIPS (Raman Induced Polarization Spectroscopy) techniques will be alternatively considered depending on the sought-after measurement. We will focus our work on the temperature, pressure and concentration measurements with different molecular species in static cell or flames. The applicability of diagnostics will be extended to turbulent mediums by means of single-shot time-doming detections. In order to improve the sensitivity of diagnostics (specially of thermometry), we propose to combine TRS technique with pulse-shaping technology for which numerical simulations reveal very promising effects. The thematic of this proposal implies knowledge of the host laboratory and skills acquired by Dr. Hertz in the frame of his TMR (Training and Mobility Researcher) in Greece at FO.R.T.H (Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas). Investigations are closely related to the diagnostic areas of aircraft and rocket engine for which the development of non-invasive measurement is a top priority in order to develop for instance optimised engines with lower cost. As a result, this project features significant possibility in term of patents as illustrated recently by our group. The development of this new activity will engage Dr. Hertz in a lasting career within our laboratory. He will lead the project in teamwork with local, national or international collaborations. Apart from the laser sources already available, the undertaking of this project will require apparatus for the experimental set-up such as high-quality optical table, set of optical components and spatial-sensitive detector.
