A theory of organizational structures: a game theoretic approach

Objective

This project deals with the development of a theory of organizational structures based upon simple games and its application to real organizational structures in business. In particular the project concerns new contributions to the theory and measurement of voting power for structured decision-making situations, i.e. for decision-making bodies where there are, for instance, contractual or authority relations or communication links between its members.

This is an area of research that has so far received little attention. The objective of the project is to fill out this lacunae with an emphasis on the theoretical and empirical study of (voting) power and allocative efficiency in organizations. This area of research is one of rich theoretical and applied potential because of
- its overlap with a number of disciplines, viz., economics, sociology, and management science and
- its utmost relevance for decisions on the design of real organizational structures (be it a firm or bureaucracy).

In order to achieve the objective the project, the research agenda contains the following three research tasks: Determination of the appropriate properties (axioms) of a priori power for structured decision making situations; Comparative analysis of generic organizational structures using measures of voting power; Empirical analysis of organizational structures.
