Objective
Accurate modelling of combustion processes is vital to the current EU policy objectives of significant reduction in emissions. Because of the need for reliable and accurate simulation tools, the host organisation has made the incorporation of advanced comb ustion modelling capability in its CFD software system one of its top priorities. The objectives of this project are to transfer the most recent developments and methodologies of combustion chemistry and physics, from the research partners, to the software developer. This knowledge will be integrated into an advanced practical software tool, in service of industrial component designers and manufacturers. The partnership is formed by NUMECA and three major European research groups, well known in combustion simulation. Each group has complementary expertise covering basic combustion models including radiation, advanced LES-chemistry coupling and new reduced chemistry models, emissions evaluation, and a large experimental database for model validation. The pro ject aims to fulfil the following requirements: i)Make available a highly integrated and high performance CFD tool, based on unstructured grid and adaptive methodology for combustion applications. ii) Develop a software framework for easy introduction of v alidated and new state-of-the-art combustion models, including coupling with LES turbulence modelling. iii)Test and validate several combustion and chemistry models, from the research partners, for premixed and non-premixed combustion for industrial applic ations. The realisation of these objectives will enhance the competitiveness of the SME and make sophisticated modelling tools available to industry. Also a solid software environment and software engineering quality assurance tools will be available to t he research partners, allowing more efficient software implementation of new models.
