European Network of Research Councils in the Humanities

Objective

In the development of the European Research Area, the contribution of the humanities is essential. Research in the Humanities is instrumental not only in understanding but also in the transformation of society. The humanities in Europe are recognised for their profound impact on the language, culture and history of different European peoples. Much of this research has had a strong national focus and there has been relatively little collaboration across national boundaries. By applying a comparative approach to research in the humanities, it will be possible to transcend such historic national limitations and to develop new collaborative research agendas. Research in the humanities is crucial in defining European identity and bringing about intercultural dialogue. The humanities can both investigate issues deemed to be of wider significance to the European Union and also raise questions that result in entirely new scientific insights. The main objective is to strengthen European research in the humanities. In light of the ongoing debate about the structuring of the European Research Area, there is an urgent need to underpin mutual interaction within the humanities and to facilitate the contribution of the humanities in the debate in the EU, in the dialogue with politicians, with the executive of the EU Commission and with national research administrations. The European Network of Research Councils in the Humanities (ERCH) has been established with this objective in mind. The SSA is the roadmap for a proposal for an ERA-NET CA. The SSA will develop the ambitions of the ERCH to find national fields of research suited for joint programmes to be developped in the CA proposal. The SSA will enable the directors and the programme managers of the three partners to identify possibilities for joint research programmes and a exchange experiences with research administration and to obtain a deeper knowledge of administrative procedures.
