Objective
Future IT systems will be closely integrated with everyday environments, both as stand-alone objects or software entities. The major claim of the project is that in order to be successfully autonomous, to deal with dynamic environments, and to be pro-active and trustworthy in supporting people's activities, such robots and devices need to have sophisticated cognitive capabilities based on anticipation.
Each partner of the project's interdisciplinary consortium is a leading scientific expert in different approaches to anticipation and cognition. By carrying out the project at a European level the partners will be forced to test and compare their models to produce innovative integrated anticipatory cognitive architectures. The project will first identify typologies of problems which require different anticipatory cognitive capabilities on the basis of specific smart environments and multi-robot scenarios. Second, the project will improve existing anticipatory models and will incorporate missing anticipatory functionalities in them. The improved architectures will be tested in the selected scenarios. Third, the project will compare in the same scenarios anticipatory architectures implemented from different theoretical backgrounds in order to highlight their strengths and weaknesses.
Finally, the project will design, implement and test cognitive architectures that integrate different anticipatory mechanisms. Simulated scenarios and real robots will be used both to improve and compare single anticipatory models and to integrate them in the same cognitive architectures. Overall the project will deliver a breakthrough in several cognitive science topics such as the relationship between anticipation and emotions; analogy and BDI systems; planning in neural networks and anticipatory classifier system. Mind RACES will make Europe a world leader in the research area of anticipatory cognitive systems.
