Objective
ECOSTILER is all about a coordinated approach in achieving energy efficient communities. The common and main element is the use of biogas and district heating systems, successful tools in reduction of primary fuel consumption and CO2 reduction. The interesting complementarity is the size of the community, ranging from large to small. Amsterdam New West, a community of about 50000 dwellings, is going to reduce its CO2 emission by 50% upon completion of the redevelopment in 2015.
Demand-side reduction, PV and innovative urban-bound wind energy systems count for about 30%, 20% is achieved by district heating. A new aspect here is the use of biogas coming from sewage treatment in the waste-to-energy plant. By integration of the two, energy efficiency of the biogas is increased from 50% to over 90%. The housing corporations are committed to a building standard that goes significantly beyond legal requirements. Energy efficiency in all activities is stimulated by the city council.
