Objective
This project has the following interlinked research objectives: (1} to establish a data warehouse of key spatial demographic and population movement data which will enable the realistic modelling ofinfectious disease spread within the EU; (2) to collate available biological data to identify feasibleranges of key biological and epidemiological parameters for infectious agents identified as posing thegreatest potential outbreak risk (whether via deliberate release or natural emergence); (3) to develop asuite of modelling approaches to identify the level of model complexity required to evaluate accuratelythe potential scale of disease outbreaks and the expected impact of control policy options for a rangeof possible release scenarios; (4) to understand the impact of large-scale population contact networksdefined by individual movement patterns and social mixing on the spatio-temporal spread of infectiousdisease outbreaks, and to identify the implications for control policy targeting; (5) to develop novelstatistical methods to estimate unknown model parameters by fitting of transmission models to bothhistorical data and outbreak data being collected in real time; (6) to develop new tools for real-timeprediction of disease outbreaks, and to characterise the limits placed on predictability by parameteruncertainty and system stochasticity. In addition, the project has the following capacity-building/information dissemination goals: (1)establishing an expert panel to provide advice to this project and to the Commission and memberstates more widely; (2) establishing an integrated EU research team capable of providing a rapidresearch capability for detailed scenario planning and outbreak response modelling/prediction; (3)disseminating the knowledge and technologies developed to researchers and policy makers acrossthe EU via reports, papers and a stakeholder workshop in the final year of the project.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
