Novel multicomponent polymer systems with compositional gradient for biomedical application

Objective

A novel approach to biomaterials has emerged as a consequence of the development ofmulticomponent polymer systems with compositional gradient. This approach allows the synthesis of uniquepolymer composites with controlled mechanical properties and required surface chemistry. The abilityto engineer gradient polymer composites using biocompatible monomers will make it possible toimprove the biocompatibility of existing polymer systems while retaining certain mechanical andphysical properties.We plan to develo p the method of engineering of the polymer composites with gradient layers ofbiocompatible polymer. The main advantage of this method is the exceptional flexibility in the creationof the materials with required properties. The studies will be done on two s eries of the gradientinterpenetrating polymer networks with varied composition at different depths from the surface, whichconsist of the polyurethane elastomer and biocompatible hydrophilic polymers polyvinylpyrrolidoneand poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate). We are going to study the characteristics of gradient polymercomposites with respect to their structure, physico-chemical properties and biocompatibility as well asto investigate the thermodynamics and kinetics of synthesis of gradient composites, their mo rphologyand miscibility, relaxation properties.Not only a scientific but also a practical value has this project. Due to unusual complex of physico-mechanical and physico-chemical properties that gradient composites may possess, this approach offersan attr active opportunity for the creation of advanced biomaterials. There is a great interest inbiocompatible polymer materials nowadays because of their application in medicine. In the hostlaboratory the biomaterials have already been investigated in collaborat ion with the industry. It ispossible that the project will find an industrial interest and will be continued.
