Transnationalism and development

Objective

This project deals with transnational networks of development. These networks can be defined as groups of migrants living on two or more countries, initiating collective projects of development for their village of origin. This project aims at gathering the knowledge existing on these networks in order to improve what is known about the relationship between "transnationalism and development". The research will be done in for steps. First, a global bibliographical inquiry in France, Great Britain and United States will be made in order to gather the information available on the topic. Second, this overview will lead to a first synthesis and to the formulation of a set of hypothesis.

These hypotheses shall be focused on the characteristics of these networks (historical background, structuring...) and their relationships with non-migrant actors (states, villager, NGO...). Third, these questions will be checked through two fieldwork inquiries on two unstudied networks: the Kabyle in Paris and the northern Indians (Penjabi and Gujarati) in Great Britain. Finally, a report will be written in order to compare the fieldwork data to the results of the synthesis. This project is transnational because of its object. It implies to develop contacts with different centres o f research and will produce a scientific networking at a European level. This project will produce of material basis for research to come.
