Toward an integrated network for pain management programmes in Europe

Objective

Improving pain management and providing equal access to pain relief for all European citizens is a major health concern in E U. Two national research programmes address this problem: French and Portuguese programmes, financed by the respective Ministries of health. Pain management is considered as a priority research domain in these countries and the national programmes aim at providing high quality health care services in the pain field in order to diminish the individual and socio-economic burden associated with pain, chronic pain is one of major costs of the health domain, comparable to that of cerebrovascular or cancer. In parallel, pain management is part of research programmes in other member states. The great imbalance between what is known on pain management and programmes setup across E.U. explains why such a big proportion of European citizens stillsuffers from acute pain during procedures or from chronic pam. Underestimation of pain is widespread acrossE.U. Well conducted national research programmes on pain management could solve most of these issues. All E.U. member stales face these common challenges to relief pain and there is no forum for reflection to implement common actions at European level. The objective of PAIN-ERA project is to overcome the current fragmentation, and in the frame of the strategic objectives of the ERA-NET scheme, to build the basis for a coordination action in the field of pain, in order to improve its overall managemenl and create a sustainable long-term cooperation between national/regional research programme makers. By regrouping specialised healthprofessionals, programme managers and policy makers working in pain management area, the PAIN-ERA project would help to prepare the ground for activities in an ERA-NET Coordination Action PAIN-ERA project will have three specific objectives: 1) Exchange of information and identify strategic joint activities; 2) Enlarge the consortium. 3) Prepare future coordination action. #
