Objective
In recent years, there has been great interest towards the transmission of digital audio in real time, especially through wireless networks. A significant application is digital audio broadcasting, a technology considered as the evolution of today's radio, which will provide the listener with a truly enveloping listening experience. At the same time, multichannel audio systems are considered as the next step in audio reproduction. The current 5.1 setting is expected to be enhanced by even more channels, possibly leading to the 10.2 system, which will be able to offer a completely immersive audio environment. The associated increase in the information content of the audio stream will directly affect the transmission of this medium. We propose techniques that can significantly reduce the transmission requirements of multichannel audio regardless of the number of channels that are transmitted. Our approach takes advantage of the inherent similarities of multiple audio channels. It is novel in that it derives additional channels from the information contained in just one or two signals in order to recreate the signals at several "virtual" microphone locations, based on previous knowledge of the acoustical characteristics of the venue. Moreover, in this project we will attempt to increase the transmission rate that can be achieved by the current systems of digital audio broadcasting. We propose the use of array signal processing methods by employing adaptive antennas for wireless transmission of sound. We will develop methods that enhance the current OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) scheme and will allow for quality scalable audio transmission by combining array processing with unequal error protection and layered coding.
