Objective
This SSA aims at establishing a "Think Tank", coordinated by the CEA, with the following mission: (a)To analyze the situation expected to exist after the FP6 European nuclear fission RTD Programs and identify the scientific, technological and social chall enges that will still be expected to remain for nuclear fission technology to overcome, within the long-term goal of sustainable development; (b)To recommend the best instrument (within the envisaged European Research Area) and corresponding Road Map for contributing to an integrated strategy aimed at ensuring that fission nuclear energy will remain an essential component of the energy mix needed for sustainable development in Europe, as endorsed by the European Commission on 10 September 2003. (A leadi ng possibility may be the establishment of a Nuclear Fission Technology Platform); The participants in this "Think Tank" would include representatives of the (i) research community, both public and private, (ii) nuclear industry, (iii) electric utilities and (iv) public authorities. The "Think Tank" will propose a road-map for: 1.strengthening the European science base and expertise, by optimally integrating research teams and RTD tools, optimizing the use of existing research infrastructures and proposi ng new infrastructures; 2.integrating scientific and technological advancements dedicated to Generation III+ and IV systems; 3.using the basis created by the integration process in the foregoing item (iii) to prepare a Technology Platform dedicated to spe cific Generation-IV technologies (such as the Very High Temperature Reactor for HydrogenProduction); 4.coordinating RTD in support of geological waste disposal technologies; 5.establishing an evaluation process for ranking and selecting the contributions of potential participants in the order of importance of the respective contributions towards insuring sustainable development for the nuclear fission energy.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
