The HERCULES programme trained young European researchers (PhD students, post-doctoral scientists) to optimally use the state-of art instruments at the present and future large installations (LI) which deliver neutrons (N) or synchrotron radiation (SR). During the project 4 HERCULES annual sessions (has) and 9 specialised courses (HSC) were organised.

The HERCULES annual session have offered basic theoretical and experimental training for a multidisciplinary audience composed of young biologists, chemists, physicists, geoscientists, organised in the most part at the scientific site were two European LI (ESRF and ILL) are located. during the 4 years of the project, has trained 285 full time participants and 23 part time participants to use the exceptional infrastructures at LI, as well as their associated high-level human potential, and involved 97 lecturers as well as several hundred practical/tutoral teachers. The great success of the has been due to the coupling of practices on high performance instruments (40% of the programme volume) carried out at partners LI (ESRF, ILL, ELETTRA, LLB, SOLEIL) with lectures and tutorials. It has also helped to build a European network of young researchers using N and SR for condensed matter studies and has greatly contributed to consolidate the communities of the two complementary investigational tools.

9 HERCULES specialised one week courses were organised during the 4 years of the project: the hsc1 "synchrotron x-ray imaging", the hsc2 "structural genomics", the hsc3 "surface, interfaces and nanostructures in the light of synchrotron radiation and neutron", hsc4 " application of neutron and synchrotron radiation to magnetism", the HSC 5 "synchrotron radiation and neutron for cultural heritage studies", the hsc6 "advances and new applications of synchrotron radiation for structural biology", the hsc7 "synchrotron radiation and neutrons for high pressure studies", the hsc8 "synchrotron radiation and neutrons techniques in environmental sciences" and the hsc9 "scattering and imaging studies of soft matter systems using synchrotron radiation and neutrons". The HERCULES specialised courses retained the importance of the practical using the state-of-art instrumentation, enabling the most recent developments on selected topics to be explored in greater depth. The 9 HERCULES specialised courses brought together 209 young researchers and involved more than 140 lecturers and practical teachers.

HERCULES annual sessions as well as specialised courses efficiently prepared young researchers for the top -level potential of the 3rd generation SR machines (Diamond, Soleil, Alba), and free electrons lasers (TELSA, Fermi-Elettra, Slicing) and for future developments of n sources (TS2, FRMII, Austron, SNS, ESS) and instrumentation (ILL millennium programme).
