Consultation conference on "Research, Innovation and European SMEs"

Objective

During the Irish Council Presidency of the European Union Enterprise Ireland will host a consultation conference

entitled "Technological Innovation in European SMEs - The Way Forward". The conference will take place on

3rd and 4th June 2004 in Clontarf Castle, Dublin and will be opened by the Tanaiste (Irish Deputy Prime

Minister) and Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment, Mary Harney.

In today's economy European SMEs need to be increasingly technologically innovative in order to-compete in

the global market place. This conference will look at the research needs of SMEs and the various initiatives at

national, European and international level used to facilitate technological innovation in SMEs. The conference

will also look at SME participation in the Framework Programmes and will explore the potential.for future

supports for SMEs in advance of the Seventh Framework Programme.

The target number of delegates will be 250 made up of representatives from SME associations, Hi-tech SMEs,

SMEs with framework experience, policy makers, the European Commission, national governments and

agencies. Potential participants will receive along with their invitation a 10-page document outlining the current

environment for European SMEs in relation to technological innovation in order to facilitate active participation in

the conference.

The format will include presentations on the research needs of SMEs, their framework experiences, the roles of

rade associations and contract research organisations, and ERA-Net in stimulating technological innovation and

internationalisation among SMEs. Breakout sessions will be held on the issues arising from these presentations.

The findings will be reported to the plenary and responded to by a European Commission representative. •

The recommendations will be carried forward for further consideration at a foilow-up conference during the Dutch

Presidency.
