Ionic liquids as a novel electrochemical medium for radically innovative, cost effective, and environmentally friendly surface treatment technologies

Objective

The main objective of IOLISURF is to generate fundamental knowledge on Ionic liquids as an electro-chemical medium for cost effective and environmental free processing method to protect by electro-deposition, multi-functional materials operating in extrem e conditions against corrosion and high temperature oxidation. It will allow a major breakthrough, that is the possibility of depositing diffusion coating from the liquid phase at low temperature and will lead to major improvement of performances and to en ormous benefits in the treatment of complex shape parts of industrial products like turbines.A substantial research and development effort will be directed in the following directions : Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship (QSAR) study of selected innovative ILs with respect to electrochemical properties Selected targets for the electrodeposition of multi-functional materials. 1) Aluminium, 2) Chromium and 3) Cr-AI and Pt-AI alloys. All these deposited materials are the basis of important multifunct ional protective materials used in the aerospace and gas turbine industry for protection against corrosion and high temperature oxidation as well as "bond coats" for Thermal Barrier coatings. The main project outputs are Basic knowledge about ionic liquids as electrolytes for electrodeposition, New optimised ionic liquids suitable for innovative surface processing methods, Relevant methods for Al, Cr, Pt, and Al alloys deposition and Optimised diffusion treatment methods. The partnership gathered to achieve the IOLISURF objectives is composed of ten partners belonging to five European countries. It includes three high-tech SMEs, four research centres and universities (INSTM, QUILL, CRANFIELD, IST), two large companies (one turbine manufacturer and one ionic liquid manufacturer) and a consulting company that will participate to project management and dissemination activities.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
