Objective
The scientific goal of present project is to find the answers for several specific but important questions of brain bioenergetics, a relatively poorly studied area in the field of brain research that has an enormous impact in neuro-degenerative diseases one of the largest groups of the diseases with great social burden. Brain bioenergetics is one of the fourth main research directions in our Centre and most of our research in this field is (or will be) focussed on few "hot spots" that include mitochondrial genomics, mitochondrial biogenesis, mitochondrial traffic and oxidative stress. However, we feel, that additional contribution to the human mobility and transfer of knowledge could significantly increase our capacity and scientific outcome. The present proposal was therefore specifically designed to meet these needs.
The main objective of current project is to reinforce the research potential of our Centre in brain bioenergetics in its most emerging fields were our own competence is weak. The project involves two components: First, transfer of theoretical know-how in fields that have been neglected in Centre. This includes a two-year position for professor of bio-informatics whose task will be to establish the interdepartmental core unit of bio-informatics and a two-year position for experienced postdoctoral researcher who will support our efforts in mitochondrial genomics. Second, short term visits of our experienced researchers to foreign labs for transfer of practical know-how.
These short-term visits will b e directed toward gathering the methodological competence in brain bioenergetics and as well for facilitating scientific cooperation with outstanding Centres aboard. We are sure that the expected deliverables of these activities -improved capacity building and increased scope of the Centre - will lead to further integration of our Centre, and as well the Estonian medical research in general, into the European Research Area.
