Objective
The aim of PRIME is to form a durable integration of research capabilities and resource centres across Europe in the field of mouse functional genomics.Mouse functional genomics in Europe is internationally competitive,but needs further integration across Europe to build on these strengths and make more efficient use of existing and developing resources (e.g. stores of mutant mouse lines and ES cells) standardised protocols (e.g. phenotyping of mutants) and infrastructures (including databases and information systems).Many countries support programmes or research activities in mouse functional genomics.Coordination of these research activities and policies across Europe and with those of the European Commission will further strengthen the research and make best use of national and Commission resources.The aim here is to build on existing research programmes,resource centres and infrastructures by focusing and integrating them,rather than establishing new programmes.The long-term aim would be to establish mechanisms to define future research policies and directions in a co-ordinated manner across Europe.There will be three main areas in PRIME: CONVERGENCE in research policy - starting with identifying key national policy makers and research funders, sharing information on national research policies and support mechanisms and leading to common goals. COMMUNALITY of research currency - forming coherent resource centres and infrastructures, developing electronic systems to allow common access to these by researchers within and outside of the network,establishment of standard approaches and protocols to research and agreeing quality control for resources and research. COMMUNICATION - establishment of training courses at centres within the network,establishment of websites to allow communication of the aims and resources available between and beyond the participants and to the public.
