The objective of this exploratory action was to establish the user needs and problems arising out of the introduction of computer integrated manufacture (CIM) into small and medium sized enterprises (SME). Using questionnaires and plant visits, the problems SMEs face when designing and implementing CIM were identified. The strengths and weaknesses of existing tools were assessed in areas of technical and organizational design of CIM systems. The problems of incorporating human factors in technology research and development projects were identified, along with techniques for the economic justification of CIM. Particular attention was paid to the future needs for CIM implementation in SMEs.
