Objective
The growing notion that in the pathology of many human diseases immunity plays an important, sometimes determining, role and that the use of antibiotics results in resistant pathogens, make high demands upon immunology research. In the functional analysis of human diseases and the role of immunity therein mouse models are crucial. Progress in immunology would substantially accelerate by improving efficacy and success rate of the generation of genetically modified mice and their phenotypic analysis in the context of a coherent research network.
Our proposal aims at:
A platform of 4 laboratories with state-of-the-art technology and experience in the generation of mouse models surrounded by 8 research groups with state-of-the-art technology and experience in the phenotypic analysis of such mice and their application in human disease models. The goal is to provide multi-disciplinary training for a new generation researchers in both genetic modification of mice and analysis of their phenotype. This will enable the m to fulfil the increasing demands in immunology research. The training requires broad understanding at the level of molecules, cells, and whole organism. Researchers in this area need to have a broad understanding of the different research sub-areas, and acquire expertise in different disciplines from protein biochemistry through molecular and cell biology to the use of mice as model organisms. Our network has all expertise and offers broader and elaborate training than could be provided by any of the lab oratories alone.
The additional input from the network ensures that potential research leaders with interests in immunology and human disease will get experience in multi-disciplinary approaches to specific biological questions. The network will offer an unique opportunity to young investigators to gain access to state-of-the-art technology and thinking in a wide variety of disciplines and systems as is not available within any one national context.
