Novel Hydrogen Storage System

Objective

In the project H2StoreS, standing for novel Hydrogen Storage System, a proof of concept (PoC) of novel liquid-organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) technology will be conducted. The aim of this PoC is to create and document the technical and business environment analysis- based evidence of near term commercial potential of this novel hydrogen storage system. Moreover, another important goal of this project is to find the right post-PoC phase technology development, commercialisation and funding partners, and to convince them in investing funds and effort in this technology.

Molecular hydrogen (H2) is a very attractive clean, renewable fuel, which can also be used for energy storage and heating systems. H2 is currently stored in high-pressure or cryogenic tanks. However, these solutions are not suitable for most commercial applications because of their low energy density, high price and safety issues. All these problems can be avoided using LOHC systems and consequently, there have been a lot of research and development efforts in this field during recent years.

The ability to store and transport H2 within a liquid carrier at standard temperatures and pressures provides many advantages over current H2 storage methods; the need for large storage tanks is eliminated, major changes in the fuelling infrastructure are avoided and the risk of explosion is minimised. However, although significantly more cost efficient than high-pressure or cryogenic tanks, current state-of-the-art LOHC systems remain too expensive for a large-scale consumer use of H2.

Within the preceding ERC project, a liquid-organic hydrogen storage system was discovered, which provides significant technical and commercial advantages and has the potential to enable the large-scale use of H2 as an energy storage vector.
