Objective
The goal of IDOMENEUS is the evolution of a common community which, through complementary strengths, will enable European researchers and industry to lead the world in combined information and data management products. The network coordinates and improves European efforts in the development of next-generation information environments which will be capable of maintaining and communicating a largely extended class of information on an open set of media. Conceptually and technically any progress will depend crucially on the success of the convergence process in the three contributing areas of databases, information retrieval and multimedia.
There are a number of subgoals of IDOMENEUS. Members of the information retrieval community aim to design an ultimate information machine that will store any kind of information which is retrievable within reasonable time by any user in a natural way. There should exist no technological constraint on the size of the store, on its physical location, on the kind of the medium nor on the style of communication. The database communmity shares the view that a similarly high degree of conceptualisation and formalisation which has been established and is being exploited for current database management can also be achieved across the whole range of novel information structures. The IDOMENEUS consortium is convinced that such achievements are necessary to guide technology development for the next generation of well-integrated, highly optimised and robust, user-friendly, commercially successful multimedia information environments.
STRUCTURE
IDOMENEUS provides services and structures for European IT industry and research, and transfers, reuses and extends the related technology. As a result, IDOMENEUS expects a substantial improvement of Europe's position in the market of next-generation information envionments with their high demands in user-friendliness and system interoperability, efficiency and robustness as well as openness for a multiplicity of media.
ACTIVITIES
Several European IT industry and information systems user groups have already expressed interest in participating in the Network. IDOMENEUS is in the process of building up an electronic and distributed document based on World-Wide-Web/Mosaic technology to make its information and services widely available to interested parties.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
