GALiVMS feasibility study focuses to provide solution tailored to monitor artisanal fishing vessels that would enable National Fishing Authorities to monitor them and, at the same time, increase fisherman security when on sea by exploiting the features of the Galileo system instead of using GPS / GLONASS.
The analysis of alternative options to monitor artisanal fishing vessels confirms that for a majority of defined criteria, the use of Galileo, and associated GALiVMS solution, will meet and exceed most of the relevant requirements. Currently, existing VMS solutions use GPS and / or GLONASS system for positioning, but it would not be a problem to replace these with Galileo’s better accuracy, coverage, enhanced reliability and integrity. A more sophisticated service (e.g. real-time navigation) that requires better accuracy than today’s GNSS systems and improved safety of fisherman will therefore benefit from Galileo’s performance.
