Magnesium deficiency is a global issue which affects approximately 68% of people. Magnesium deficiency can lead to a number of health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis and arthritis. The recommended treatment up to now for absorbing these nutrients was bathing in Epsom salts, a procedure that calls for a considerable amount of time, water and electrical energy. MgSO4 has identified a market opportunity to transdermally deliver magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts) in a highly efficient and resourceful manner. The MgSpa utilises a unique water recycling system to minimise water input whilst maintaining the properties and functionality of a conventional electric shower. The MgSpa is designed for use in both commercial and residential properties and will principally be targeted toward spas and the health and wellness industry.

The technology has been developed and patented by MgSO4 and enables an Epsom salt treatment using 97% less water and 80% less energy than a standard electric shower. The technology has been validated in small scale laboratory tests however, will be further tested and validated for its technical viability. The objectives of MgSO4’s Phase 2 project are to finalise the industrial design of the MgSpa; engineering and optimisation of the MgSpa and its components, in particular the water recycling system; demonstrate and validate the technology through installations in spas and a statistical analysis of the health benefits experienced by end users; and develop a European supply and value chain. The overall objective of the project is to start full commercialisation of MgSO4’s MgSpa technology as a reliable innovation validated by the relevant clients, spas and health and wellness centres, and end-users.
MgSO4 accomplished a full analysis of the technical and business potential of the MgSpa and the strategy to reach commercialisation. Throughout the duration of the project, MgSO4 has expanded their existing knowledge of the health and wellness industry, the potential environmental efficiency of the technology and in particular the impact it will have upon the European market. Many commercial aspects of the technology and business have been assessed. MgSO4 analysed its current level of development and reviewed its overall project objectives to realise the necessary design optimisation required for the intended industrialisation of the MgSpa. A suitable risk analysis was carried out, with shower performance issues identified as key risks, and necessary mitigation strategies prepared. Within the business feasibility, MgSO4 addressed its value chain identifying strategic partnerships that will be fundamental to both the successful delivery of the Phase 2 project and through commercialisation. During the PH1 project MgSO4 has defined a minimum viable product, established engineering and industrialisation plans, and as well prepared the IP strategy.
The expected outcome of the project is to start full commercialisation of MgSO4’s MgSpa at the end of Phase 2 as a reliable innovation validated by the relevant clients and end users. The MgSpa solution will offer an efficient and reliable alternative to existing recycling showers whilst offering health benefits to all end users. MgSO4 will also create jobs and boost economic growth for European SMEs using its wide supply chain and network of distributors. MgSO4’s technology will contribute to the goals of the EU2020 targets with respect to energy and resource efficiency, and also considering the Water Framework. The overall vision of the MgSO4 management team is to revolutionise the health and wellness industry, whilst offering the EU global leadership in this field.
