PatIent specific bONE RepositionING

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - PIONEeRING (PatIent specific bONE RepositionING)

Reporting period: 2015-07-01 to 2015-12-31

A fracture may malunite in the healing process resulting in bone deformity and loss of function. The project aim is to improve accuracy of corrective surgery by providing “patient-specific implant” (PSI) technology . The project delivers 1) 3D planning and implant design software, 2) implants that force accurate positioning and fixation of bone segments, 3) implants optimized for shape and load, and 4) optimized production procedures. The implants will render treatment minimally invasive. Phase 1 will allow is to first do a feasibility study and write a business plan to see if it is worthwhile to continue with the development steps in the further project.
The project enabled us to execute a market study to better understand the market potential for the new products. A feasibility study was done and a Focus Group was done. A first concept of the Business plan was written to market the new products. We were able to add two new customers. Based on the potential we made a decision to market the product based on the work done in the SME-Instrument Phase 01.
In parallel to the project we continued developing our first product concepts we found that we were able to reduce the size of the concept by 50% and also reduce the fixtures with 30%. Based on these exiting findings we make a very solid case with high impact on the patients and industry. Both products in this online portal will revolutionize future reconstructive surgery and planning since they enable accurate bone reconstruction with minimum surgical effort for the first time.
