Today EU Transport fully depends on fossil fuels. In order to green the transport sector, the EC strives to a CO2-reduction of 60% in 2050. Electric vehicles (EVs) will play an increasing important role in sustainable EU mobility. In recent years, the number of EVs and charging stations increased significantly, especially in The Netherlands. However, the electricity grids in EU urban areas will be highly vulnerable when the amount of EVs will continue to increase without the availability of smart technologies. In order to ensure future capacity, quality and reliability of the electricity grid, novel smart EV charging solutions are required. Such smart charging solutions should enable demand based charging of EVs, combined with reduction of energy consumption and reduction of investments in the electricity grid.

Specific objectives in this H2020-SMEINST Phase 1 study proposal for Transport Green Vehicles 8 were:
- Explore similar business cases for the implementation of (an open version of) GreenFlux’s Service & Operations Platform for Smart Charging (GSOP-SC) in several European urban areas.
- Evaluate the required specifications in such European urban areas with local potential stakeholders.
- Elaborate a detailed business plan per local area.
Based on the exploration of business cases for the implementation GSOP-SC in several European urban areas and the first initial evaluation with local potential stakeholders, GreenFlux identified four main target urban areas for the short and mid-term scale-up of the GreenFlux Service & Operations Platform for Smart Charging. These target areas are North Rhine-Westphalia, Munich, Berlin (Germany), Oslo (Norway), Copenhagen (Denmark), and London (UK).

Based on these target urban areas, GreenFlux gathered extensive information and knowledge about these markets, their current (and potential) energy infrastructure, as well as the lokal stakeholders, partners and value chain. Then, this input was used to elaborate on the different main aspects of the business plan. Additional activities that will contribute to this business plan elaboration were, for example, business model validations and the development of pricing strategies, analysis of local urban markets, an economic and technological risk assessment, the development of a market introduction plan per urban target area, definition of most relevant demonstration pilots, the development of an innovation strategy, IP management, and partner search based on the technological and economic risk assessment.
After completing this SME Instrument phase 1 feasibility study, GreenFlux will continue to realize the following innovation project objectives:
- To expand towards a global, scalable GSOP Smart Charging 3.0 platform, that will handle all types of charging stations via open protocols to any European charge station manufacturers, any European DSO, all service providers, every car manufacturer, and any EV via this platform and Apps.
- To build an open platform version, interconnecting all EU charge station manufacturers, EU Distribution Systems Operators (DSO), Charge Point Operators (CPO), Service providers, car manufacturers, and EV’s.
- To expand the GreenFlux SaaS business platform to connect all types of (PH)EV charge protocols (i.e. passenger EVs, electric buses, vans, and trucks), to any electricity network topology.
- A seamless and ergonomic energy management cycle, spanning the entire cycle from re-charging spot selection/reservation to plug-out after re-charging, providing any relevant information on i.e. price and type of energy resource.

Such a platform will facilitate a complete chain optimization, from EV user to network operator, offering excellent commercial prospects.
