9eGEN - Development of innovative lightweight HVDC 9-phase Brushless/Generator for Clean Sky Rotorcraft

Periodic Reporting for period 4 - 9eGEN (9eGEN - Development of innovative lightweight HVDC 9-phase Brushless/Generator for Clean Sky Rotorcraft)

- Scope of the project is to develop a TRL6 High Voltage Generating System called "9eGEN" to be installed onto Airbus' LifeRCraft demonstrator.
- The project will not have a direct impact on all members of society, but on specific categories of stakeholders, the most important of whom are Aircrafts Manufacturers, Engines Manufacturers and Research Institutions. The HVDC Brushless/Generator technology of 9eGEN has the ambition to become a point of reference for the selection of HVDC and DC Power Generation Systems by Aircrafts and Engines Manufacturers at international level and to play an important contribute in the making of a more efficient, safer and greener aircraft.
- The objective of 9eGEN System is to integrate new technology HVDC Generating solutions (IMS technology for rotating and static rectifier and the use of 9 phase winding configuration for the stator). Weight saving is a crucial design target, as well, and was one of the main design efforts the company worked on during the first 18 months of the project.
Development activities during the first 18 months of the project have concerned the preliminary and critical design of the HVDC Generator and GCU in all the main technical design aspects, i.e. electrical, electronic, mechanical, thermal, software and RAMS.
The manufacturing process and components selection have also been studied with a view to meet the ROHS requirement definied by the technical specification.
Up until the end of the project, ASE will be involved in all the design activities that will lead to the manufacturing of a TRL6 High Voltage Generating System. The above-mentioned beyond-the-state-of-the-art technical features that characterize 9eGEN System are expected to generate an important impact on the future demand for similiar systems and a new approach to the way HVDC Generating technology is conceived among the stakeholders of interest, also thanks to the efforts in terms of dissemination and exploitation activities that were made during the first 18 months and that will not only continue, but also increase in the coming months.
