Objective
In the conventional continuous casting technique the mould is oscillated in the direction of strand withdrawal and the same time a lubricant is used to reduce friction. Research in recent years has shown that the oscillation marks can be improved by increasing the frequency to 10-100 Hz, but not eliminated. A completely new method will be tried. To reduce friction between the product and the mould powerful ultrasonic waves will be used in the frequency range of 10-20 KHz. Suitable transducers will be developed and tested with the aim of installing them later in an industrial plant. It is known that friction can be reduced by using ultrasonic waves of high intensity. Consequently an improvement in surface quality is expected.
