Objective
Excessive wear in refractory components is chiefly due to the wide variations in the thermal stresses to which they are subjected. It is essential to measure and gain a precise understanding of these stresses if the importance of the phenomena is to be assessed. The aim of the research is to study the validity of a pre-established model, initially at laboratory scale, by determining the properties of refractory materials (thermal conductivity and strength) and the distribution of the temperature gradients in the materials tested. The tests will be continued at pilot-plant scale on a 3-tonne capacity oxygen converter (installation of thermocouples in the refractories for thermal profile measurements). Lastly, work will be carried out on 120-tonne production units (at Ijmuiden) in order to ascertain the thermal profiles in production conditions.
